COVID and the Slow Death of Public Education

Throughout the entire season of COVID-mania, the tabloids were filled with festive shouts hailing Cuomo and Newsom as drivers of the good, protectors of the elderly, and authors of their own self-congratulatory autobiographies. These political skunks have now secreted their vile blood for everyone to see and common folk have determined that they are not like us. They are a strange breed of layered evil.

Fast forward, and Newsom is as popular as the transgendered orangutan at Disney+ and Cuomo went the way of his brother, disgraced like Toobin in a zoom call. Let their tribes decrease!

Republicans have since gained much ground, and the Supreme Court maintains a conservative ethos with five men and three-and-a-half women. Or, something like that. But again, I am not a mathematician. Here in sunny Florida, DeSantis has offered a model of politicking that is clear and crisp like a full bag of Doritos that Musk intends to fill to the brim if he keeps his promises.

And then we should note the glorious news out from the AP just this happy morning. But before I elaborate further, I do wish to remind everyone that these little victories didn’t happen by chance or because William Lane Craig doesn’t believe in a literal Adam, no! no! They happened because the God who created a historical Adam turned the ideas and plans of evil men for good (Gen. 50:20).

In other words, we are winning in so many areas because Christians did not listen to Russell Moore, Tim Keller, and Ligon Duncan. We listened to the voices of reason that kept pressing the claims of Jesus to all areas of life without hesitation. Yes, there were some real turds doing it wrong, but I prefer the way they did wrong than the way the others didn’t…at all.

Back to the AP article today that begins with this “dreadful” headline: “Headcounts are down at public schools. Now budgets are too.” In sum, there is an elimination of lots of jobs in the public school system and they are trying to close budget gaps because “Public school systems are beginning to feel the pinch from enrollment losses tied to the coronavirus pandemic.” And to what do we owe such losses? We owe them to COVID-mania that erupted in our midst like it was the Inquisition imprisoning men and women and children.

So, the Department of Education, also known as the “Ministry of Spoof,” worked to get their educational games to a screen near you. And the longer they kept going, the more frustrated moms and dads became and the more frustrated, the more they thought to themselves, “What the hell are we doing, honey?!”

Christian school options that didn’t cave and homeschooling parents with their 15-passenger vans started to show up everywhere. Whereas prior to COVID, there was about 2% of the population homeschooled, that number has grown significantly. This forced a prominent public school leader to ask: “Where did those kids go? Where are they? They didn’t come back this year. That’s what’s laying on that additional reduction in our funding.” The article answers with hesitation the obvious: “Families opting for homeschooling, private schools and other options sent enrollment down sharply in the first full school year of the pandemic…”

This is all good news! And the best way to deal with momentum is to accelerate the momentum. More pressure. More movements towards homeschooling and private schooling and more engaged dads and moms in their children’s education. Now, there are some fine people in that system and I laud their efforts, but they see the trends and are realizing more and more that their efforts are in vain in pushing Christ’s agenda.

This is not the time to go timid on the haters, but to confront them with action and Easter cheer. Show them that family breakfast and dinner tables are better when we recite the same catechism, rather than the Tik Tok songbook. Show them that families that stay together academically, eat together and party together. And then, back to my old preaching outline, let churches do all they can economically to stir these families to consider other options. If anything, the time is ripe. Let’s redeem this season!
